One Brick to Rule them All...

Members of OneLUG made these three beautiful and articulate mosaics that were displayed at an art show recently. The White Tree of Gondor was built by Brandon Griffith. The Horse of Rohan was built by Remi Gagné. The White Hand of Saruman was built by Bruce Lowell.

Not only are they great, simple designs, but the borders around them are also constructed really nicely. (The White Hand border is superb.)

Also, some interesting greebling-like technique done on the horse:

Center of Learning

The winners of Classic-Castle.com's Colossal Castle Contest have been revealed.  The winner for the category "Center of Learning" was Thomas Arrowford with "The Great Library of Salamackia".  It boasts a mosaic map of the LCC world of Roawia on the floor.

Congrats on the win!

Sonic in Modulex

Ryan H. (eldeeem) has been investing in a lot of Modulex lately.  He says it is perfect for making mosaics based on square pixels.  Here he shows us an example with Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic Mosaic

Modulex has a different size ratio than regular LEGO bricks.  A Modulex 1x1 brick really is a cube, unlike the standard LEGO 1x1 brick, which has a dimension of 5x5x6 half-plates.  Modulex dimensions would definitely make it easier to construct SNOT-y mosaics (with the studs pointing to the top, instead of outwards).  One other interesting aspect to Modulex is that it comes in different colors, as you can see in Ryan's chart here

Reflection and Perspective

Dave Shaddix keeps pumping out great mosaics.

I really like the illusion of light in this one, both in the differences in shading on the different sides of Buzz Aldrin's body, and in the reflection of the helmet.  Apparently, the reflection in the original photograph shows the LEM and the photographer, Neil Armstrong.

Dave follows up this foray into space with another space-themed mosaic, an "adaptation in LEGO of the "Earthrise" photo taken by astronaut William Anders during the Apollo 8 mission, the first manned voyage to orbit the Moon."

You can read more about the original photograph and get a close-up shot of this mosaic here.  Be sure to check out the different colors it uses.

It's super effective!

Flickr user, DarthNick, made an excellent Pokémon Sky-Fi Stadium for the Eurobricks Micro Sci-Fi Contest (MSFC).

Pokémon: Sky-Fi Stadium
The actual stadium part of the creation includes a wonderful, cheese-slope Pokéball mosaic.

Best of luck to Nick in the contest, and make sure you check out the rest of his Lego creations here.
